California Maritime Academy, Six Flags Discovery Kingdom and Mare Island Museum are offering “Educational Experiences Outside The Classroom..” The tours are designed so students can learn about exciting careers in demand in the Maritime Field. Opportunities in the maritime world are as vast as the oceans that connect counties and economies around the globe. The tours can be adapted for K-5, middle and/or high school students.

The California Maritime Academy provides students with the tools necessary to chart their course and launch their career from engineering to marine transportation, from international relations to international business and logistics. The tours will cover cutting edge technologies, and the knowledge, skills and leadership opportunities essential in the global economy of today and for the future. Since joining the California State University in 1996, Cal Maritime has had the highest placement rates in the CSU system. On average Cal Maritime graduates receive several offers with salaries well above the national average.

  • The CAL Maritime tours are approximately 2 hours, 10:30 AM to 12:30 AM, and will consist of:
  • Tour of Campus, Training Ship Golden Bear, & World Class Ship Simulator
  • Mock Completing Entrance Application and Financial Aid
  • Q & A Session

Six Flags Discovery Kingdom provides Marine Life and Wild Life “behind the scenes” educational tours, designed for K-5 students. Tours for Middle/High School students are also available. The tours are approximately 2 hours and offered only on park non-operating days from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM; advanced reservations required. and consist of: Schools may choose to do either Land or Sea Adventure and may consist of the following areas:

  • Dolphin / Marine Life Training
  • Sea Lion Adaptations
  • Killer Whale Conservation
  • Walrus Shark Husbandry
  • Wild Life / Bird Behavior
  • Creatures of the Wild Life Adaptations’
  • Giraffe Elephant Husbandry
  • Tiger Habitats & Conservation

Middle and High School levels are encouraged to attend educational days that take place Fridays in May of each year during park operating hours.

Six Flags Discovery Kingdom also offers other animal education opportunities, such as spending the night in their shark aquarium, swimming with dolphins, trainer for a day and behind the scenes tours.

Mare Island Museum provides tours of this amazing Historic Naval Base, which was founded in 1854! Tours can include the dry docks, Admiral’s Mansion, the Chapel, including its Tiffany Stained Glass Windows, and of course the Mare Island Museum.
